Hi Cole
I have not done any test on this. We should test to prove it but on timber specialist engineers opinion, having cut on top is better than having crack on side. Crack on side on neutral axis can cause the split in large load, we will do the test on next opportunity. We did 27 different joint test last week, I am hoping to upload the test video sometime soon.

Well, how did it come out?

What about the structural integrity of the timber with a kirf cut? How much is it compromised?

Hello Jeremy. Thank you for leaving your comment. Can you send me any drawing, pictures, sketch or anything so I can see what you mean. dai@daizen.com Timber frame is just the square wood structure but has own heavy weight. In some application it fits and some may not, it all depends, and very often, project with issue turns out great result after explore the all options.

I am a student of Architectural and Engineering Tech. at TRU in Kamloops. I have been browsing your website and I really admire your work. I'm researching a school project. Can you use timber frames to build a living area above an existing bungalow (1 storey, no basement) without using any of the structural elements of the existing building? The new building will sit on/above the old one, but have its own footings.

I have a project in Aldergrove, B.C. that is going through the design stage but the construction drawings are not complete. Are you interested in providing a quote some time later when the drawings are completed for a Golf Course Clubhouse, 16th Century Chinese Temple architecture style (sorry it's not Japanese). The interior and exterior will have exposed heavy timber structure reminscient of ancient
Chinese "raised beam " construction (preferably no exposed metal fasteners). I will send you a coloured rendering of the project if you are interested. The ground floor is 4800 sq. ft. The lower level will not require the same architectural treatment. I presume you have your own structural engineers. regards,
David

Hi Dai,

Very nice Blog! I have a project requiring drilling long holes in the hammer beams. Your ideas are helpful.

We did a hammerbeam on one of our projects this summer. We didn't require a steel tie but needed to have a double post to provide sufficient rigidity. Pictures in my gallery (Nelson Island Project).

Keep up the good work.
